QuickTake:
The sentencing of former “Home Improvement” cast member Zachery Ty Bryan is fallout from his arrest in the fall at a campground near Lowell.
Former “Home Improvement” child actor Zachery Ty Bryan was sentenced Friday, March 20, to 19 months in prison for violating the terms of his probation after a 2023 fourth-degree domestic violence assault conviction.
Bryan, 44, appeared remotely while incarcerated at a California jail serving a 16-month sentence for driving under the influence, about two weeks after Lane County Circuit Judge Bradley Cascagnette issued a bench warrant for Bryan’s arrest for his no-show at a scheduled court hearing in Lane County.
Bryan’s defense attorney, John Kolego, told the court March 2 Bryan had been jailed, with Friday’s sentencing based on a Dec. 3 show cause order alleging Bryan:
- Failed to abstain from using intoxicants
- Failed to comply with geographic restrictions imposed as part of his probation
- Had prohibited contact with the assault victim
A sentencing document stated that Bryan admitted to violating the terms of his probation after he was arrested last November by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded Nov. 29 to a report of reckless endangerment at a campground near Big Fall Creek Road involving Bryan and Johnnie Faye Cartwright, who has been described in previously published reports as Bryan’s fiancée. The pair have multiple children together.
A court order from the 2023 fourth-degree assault case prohibited Bryan from being in contact with Cartwright, according to the sheriff’s office, leading to his arrest. Cartwright was arrested at the same time and charged with three misdemeanors before pleading guilty in January to driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving.
Kolego did not respond to questions from Lookout, but told People that while his client had been drinking, “he doesn’t deserve to go to prison for 19 months, so I was extremely disappointed” with the sentence.
Bryan “wants to be a decent, law-abiding citizen, and the best father he knows how [to be], but he’s dealing with inner demons, and has been coping with alcohol,” Kolego told People. He added that Bryan also must face an Oklahoma driving under the influence charge.
