QuickTake:

Our list of things to keep you busy this week also includes a jazz guitar duo at the Shedd and a circus-themed Broadway musical at the Hult.

Good day, Lookout readers and happy midterm election week. We have a full docket of things to do, from Broadway musical theater at the Hult Center to jazz at the Shedd Institute and a wonderland of holiday shopping. Let’s get into it:

Thrifting at Tom’s Market

Those who are thrifty and love retro style might enjoy the Found First vintage market held at Tom’s Market this weekend. There will be $5 bins, racks of clothing, burgers and coffee — and it’ll all be covered in the event of rain. If you’re looking for a wardrobe upgrade as the weather gets chillier, this might be the place to find it.

Lasers and music

Lasers, lights and Gorillaz. Oh my! The Eugene Science Center is hosting a laser show to accompany the greatest hits of Gorillaz, the virtual alternative rock band. Attendees aged 10 and up can experience the amalgamation of music genres that the band combines, while viewing the musical fiction through a laser show.

  • Where: Eugene Science Center, 2300 Leo Harris Parkway, Eugene
  • How much: Tickets start at $8; details can be found online

A jazz guitar duo is coming to the Shedd Institute for the Arts this week. Veteran jazzman Frank Vignola will perform with rising star Pasquale Grasso on Thursday night. The two have performed together frequently over the past two years.

African guitarist at the WOW Hall

Mdou Moctor, originally from Tchintabaraden, Niger, taught himself how to play the guitar using cables from bicycle brakes as strings. Now he’s touring the world, performing his unique approaches to West African blues. Press materials for Moctar say his songs “include acoustic odes to his arid homeland, but also psych-rock odysseys supercharged with galloping rhythms and rock-star techniques.”

Box office

Special screenings

“North by Northwest,” Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 thriller, is playing at the Art House. Cary Grant stars as an advertising executive who is mistaken for a spy and chased across the country by dangerous enemies. Along the way, he meets a mysterious woman and ends up in a romantic affair. This movie ends with one of the most famous chase scenes in movie history — and it’s not even the one with the crop duster.

On the big screen

‘Wild Horse Nine’

We’re embracing the spy theme this week. “Wild Horse Nine” follows two CIA agents in Chile during the 1970s right before the coup to overthrow Chilean President Salvador Allende. It’s a comedy meets action thriller, as the two agents — Chris (John Malkovich) and his loud-mouthed partner, Lee (Sam Rockwell) — traverse Chile, from Santiago to Easter Island.

Playing at Metro Cinemas and Cinemark Eugene-Springfield

‘The Cat in the Hat’

In this new animated rendition of “The Cat in the Hat,” comedian and actor Bill Hader voices our feline friend. Will this new take on the Dr. Seuss classic compare to other filmed attempts? Follow the Cat in the Hat as he tries to cheer up the two siblings stuck inside on a rainy day and their grumpy goldfish.

Playing at Regal Valley River Center and Cinemark Eugene-Springfield

That’s all for this week. If these choices don’t tickle your fancy, please take a look at our events calendar, which is updated frequently with new activities. Also, feel free to message me at Leoh@lookoutlocal.com with any tips or suggestions.
