A 47-year-old Swisshome man died Sunday, Nov. 1, when the SUV he was driving veered off Highway 36 near Mapleton and hit a boulder, Oregon State Police said.

Jarod Layne Upham died at the scene, state police said.

Troopers responded at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday to the crash, about 5 miles from Mapleton. A preliminary investigation found that Upham was driving west in a black Audi Q3. The SUV traveled onto the westbound shoulder, went off the road and up an embankment, where it collided with the boulder and rolled over, state police said. Upham was ejected.

Bystanders attempted to help Upham but could not revive him, state police said. Based on the investigation, police said, Upham was not wearing a seatbelt. Police said it wasn’t known why the car went off the road.

Traffic along the highway, which stretches from Mapleton to Junction City, was affected for about four hours.
