A 50-year-old Springfield man is alleged to have transferred more than $34 million in suspected drug proceeds to Mexico and Honduras according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court.
Esteban Peralta Fragozo is alleged to have transmitted the money via wire transfers from a Springfield business he owned and operated, El Kaiman Western Wear.
Federal authorities described the shop as selling clothing but also providing international money transfer services.
Court documents allege the transfers took place from January 2018 to July of this year.
Investigators used a confidential informant to gather evidence, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon.
“According to the complaint, Fragozo processed multiple wire transfers after being told the funds were derived from drug trafficking and used false sender information and identification documents to complete the transactions,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
After obtaining a warrant, authorities on Wednesday, Nov. 4, searched Fragozo’s home, vehicle and business, alleging they found a Ruger pistol, ammunition and “bulk currency.”
Fragozo, a Mexican national, is alleged to have admitted to owning the pistol and being in the United States without authorization. Owning a firearm while in the United States without permanent resident status or citizenship is generally prohibited.
He appeared Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Eugene and was ordered held in custody pending a hearing scheduled for Nov. 17.
