Zachery Ty Bryan, former child star in the TV sitcom “Home Improvement,” dodged an attempted vehicle assault Saturday, Nov. 29, when a woman who reportedly is his fiancee allegedly tried to run him over at a campground northeast of Lowell, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded at about 12:30 p.m. to a campground near Big Fall Creek Road, the sheriff’s office said in a statement Monday.
According to the sheriff’s office: Bryan, 44, and Johnnie Faye Cartwright, 32, were in a pickup with the couple’s three small children, when Bryan exited the vehicle and began walking on the road.
“Cartwright then attempted to run over Bryan, crashing the truck with the children inside into the ditch. Bryan was able to move out of the way and avoid injury. No one inside the pickup was injured,” the sheriff’s office said in its statement.
While deputies booked Cartwright into Lane County Jail on suspicion of felony attempted assault, Lane County Circuit Court records show that as of Dec. 2 she had been charged with three misdemeanor crimes: driving under the influence of intoxicants, recklessly endangering another person, and reckless driving.
Cartwright on Dec. 1 pleaded not guilty to all three charges.
Later, on Jan. 14, she pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving. As part of a plea deal with prosecutors, the charge for recklessly endangering another person was dismissed.
Lane County Circuit Judge Bradley Cascagnette sentenced Cartwright to 24 months of probation and 30 days in jail, with credit for time served. The sentence specified that Cartwright was eligible for an “alternative sanction” rather than jail under state law.
Cascagnette ordered Cartwright to pay a $1,755 fine for driving under the influence of intoxicants and also ordered her license suspended for one year.
Deputies also arrested Bryan for a probation violation, as a court order from a previous fourth-degree assault case prohibited him from being in contact with Cartwright, according to the sheriff’s office. Both are Eugene residents.
In 2023, Cartwright issued a statement to media after assault charges were filed against Bryan, who earlier this year was arrested on a domestic violence charge in South Carolina, according to a report from People.
Lane County records show Bryan was convicted of domestic violence menacing and fourth-degree domestic violence assault in 2021 and two counts of fourth-degree domestic violence assault in 2023.
The children at the scene were placed with a family member, according to the sheriff’s office.
