A 50-year-old Mapleton man died Saturday, Aug. 2, while swimming in the North Umpqua River, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Jonathon Vasquez went underwater and did not resurface, the sheriff’s office said.

Just after 5 p.m, emergency responders were called to a location near Highway 138 East about five miles northeast of Glide, the sheriff’s office said. Rescue personnel later recovered the body of Vasquez.

About three hours earlier, also in the Glide area, emergency responders rescued a 33-year-old Myrtle Creek woman swept downstream by a North Umpqua River current. Central Douglas Fire & Rescue used a raft to reach Andrea Norton, who had injured her ankle upon coming to shore, according to the sheriff’s office.
