Two days, seven local races, 17 candidates… lots of questions.

In case you missed Lookout Eugene-Springfield’s Board of Lane County Commissioners and Eugene City Council candidate forums last week, we tried to cover as many topics as possible.

But of course we hardly scratched the surface.

I’ve been publishing plenty of letters endorsing candidates ahead of the May 19 primary election. But I’m wondering: If you could ask one question to either the county commissioner or city council candidates, what would it be?

Let me know, and make it something they could all answer. If I get enough responses, I’ll publish them all in a combined letter to the editor on Friday. Send questions to: lte@lookoutlocal.com.

Don’t forget the ballot measures

Candidates understandably take up a lot of the election season oxygen. But across Lane County, voters will also weigh in on a total of 11 ballot measures.

Letter writers have had a lot to say about two of those measures: the Lane County Watersheds Bill of Rights, which would allow residents to enforce new legal rights for watershed protections, and the Eugene Public Library levy, which would increase the tax residents pay to support library services.

In a Wednesday letter to the editor, Barbara Davis, a resident of Waldport in Lincoln County, urged Lane County residents to support the watersheds measure and “vote for letting local people have a say over Wall Street’s impact on our drinking water and our children’s health.”

For three generations of Eugene school librarian Amy Page’s family, meanwhile, the Eugene Public Library has been a source of information and belonging. In a letter published Thursday supporting the levy, she called the library “the heart of our community.”

The wayward Oregon GOP

Oregon hasn’t elected a Republican governor in 40 years, and a Republican Senator in 20 years. Oregon’s fourth congressional district, which covers most of Lane County, has gone Democratic for a half-century.

What’s a political moderate to do? Lookout columnist Joshua Purvis explored the tattered state of the Oregon GOP and how, despite historic opportunities in this electoral cycle, “The Republican brand in Oregon is too narrow, too nationalized and too culturally mismatched to the voters who decide elections here.”

If you’re politically moderate or conservative, I would love to hear from you: What do you think Oregon Republicans need to do to regain relevance? (lte@lookoutlocal.com)

4J’s budget blunder

Last week wasn’t all about elections. It also brought fallout from Eugene School District 4J, which is staring down a larger-than-expected deficit — to the tune of $16 million — for next school year due to poor budget modeling by the district’s finance team.

The revelation followed a grueling months-long process to draw up 269 staff cuts, co-locate two schools and reduce middle school electives.

The Lookout Eugene-Springfield Editorial Board argued that the district’s error requires more than an acknowledgement of mistakes made. It requires sharing three things with the 4J budget committee and the public starting at its next meeting on Wednesday.
