Citing forecasted high winds and low relative humidity, the National Weather Service issued a red flag wildfire warning for parts of Lane County and the southern Willamette Valley.

The warning runs Monday, Aug. 3, from 1-8 p.m. Forecasters issue a red flag warning when weather conditions pose an increased threat of rapidly spreading wildfire.

Forecasters expect northerly winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph through the afternoon, along with relative humidity as low as 20 to 25 percent. The combination, the weather service said, may create conditions favorable for rapid fire spread and urged caution around potential ignition sources, especially in grassy areas.

Tyler Kranz, a lead meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the warning is fairly routine for early August. He said the threat eases once the sun goes down.

“After 8 p.m., two things happen: The winds weaken and the relative humidity increases, so that will decrease the threat for rapid fire spread,” Kranz said.

Kranz said despite this being a “marginal” red flag warning, it covers the southern Willamette Valley from Millersburg to the Eugene-Springfield area.
