It’s time to pass the torch in Eugene Ward 5. I have lived in the ward for 38 years and both my home and business are located here. I have never met our current councilor, Mike Clark. I have not met Athena Aguiar either, but she took the time to visit my home while I was at work and left her information. I visited her website, saw who was supporting her and her views on civic issues, and when I contacted her campaign, the response was quick and attentive.
Our council-manager form of government puts policy in the hands of councilors and administration in the hands of the city manager. While all who are running for the council seat recognize the same challenges our city faces, such as budgets near breaking point and housing and public safety needs growing, Aguiar brings education and experience that can focus on our environment. Moreover, she is more likely to engage in strong public advocacy for her positions.
Outreach to the community is important for success in local government. Listening to constituents is also a critical activity. I’ve not received outreach from the incumbent in 20 years. With the crisis in democracy facing the nation, citizen engagement in local government is a first line of defense for our American heritage. I trust that Aguiar takes this role seriously, based on her connection to the ward and her life experience.
In the recent City Club of Eugene forum for the candidates, Aguiar acquitted herself well, recognizing both the issues specific to the ward, but also acknowledging the connections ward constituents have with the University of Oregon and our downtown cultural resources.
I look forward to the opportunity to vote for Athena Aguiar as my Ward 5 city councilor in the May 19 election.
