The American Red Cross declared its second-ever national blood supply crisis, July 27, after blood donations fell to a four-year summer low, limiting the distribution of the most commonly transfused blood, type O blood, to hospitals.
Lane County residents can roll up their sleeves and donate blood Friday, Aug. 7, at a drive hosted by the American Red Cross and Junction City High School Leadership.
It will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Junction City High School gym, 1135 W 6th Ave., Junction City.
Eligible type O, B- or A- donors are encouraged to consider a Power Red donation (a donation with nearly double the amount of red blood cells) to maximize their impact, since red blood cells are the most commonly transfused blood component.
Donors who give blood during August will receive a $20 Amazon gift card by email.
Appointments can be scheduled by calling 1-800-RED CROSS or by visiting RedCrossBlood.org using sponsor code JCHS.
