QuickTake:
Hayward Field will host the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials for the sixth consecutive time, with a new six-day format ahead of the Los Angeles Games.
The U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials are coming back to Eugene.
USA Track & Field and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced Monday that Hayward Field will host the 2028 trials June 17-22, 2028, in advance of the Los Angeles Olympics, which begin July 14, 2028.
It will be the sixth consecutive Olympic track and field trials held in Eugene.
“TrackTown USA and Eugene’s record of success in selecting America’s best track and field athletes speaks for itself in the 52 Olympic gold medals U.S. athletes have won since 2008,” USATF CEO Max Siegel said in a statement. “There is no doubt these Trials will produce a team that is built for LA.”
Hayward Field has also hosted the USATF Outdoor Championships 10 times, most recently in 2025, and will host the event again in 2027. Eugene hosted the 2022 World Athletics Championships, the first time the event was held in the United States, as well as the recent World Athletics U20 Championships, which brought more than 1,500 athletes from more than 140 countries to Eugene.
The 2028 trials will feature a new six-day competition format, down from eight days in previous editions. USATF said the change came after consultation with athletes seeking a more efficient selection process with the Olympic Games beginning less than a month later.
The decathlon, heptathlon and 10,000 meters will be held separately earlier in the spring to give athletes more recovery time before the Olympics. Dates and locations for those events have not yet been announced. The marathon trials will be held in St. Louis on March 25, 2028.
The 2028 trials will air across NBC, Peacock and NBCSN. Qualifying standards and qualifying windows are expected to be announced in 2027.
