A 36-year-old man has been charged with first-degree arson in connection with a wildfire that and scorched some 80 acres near Hills Creek Reservoir south of Oakridge.

Prosecutors allege Rodney Daniel Trotter IV started a fire Wednesday, Aug. 26, near Forest Service Road 21 that resulted in economic damages of $50,000 or more, according to a charging document filed Monday, Aug. 31, in Lane County Circuit Court.

In response to the fire, the U.S. Forest Service closed nearby Sand Prairie Campground, about 14 miles south of Oakridge. The 21-site campground remained closed as of Tuesday, according to online information from the U.S. Forest Service.

Trotter has also been charged with misdemeanor reckless burning in connection with a fire damaging a woman’s tent and, in a separate criminal case, felony strangulation and fourth-degree domestic violence assault.

Trotter was booked into Lane County Jail on Thursday. His bail has been set at $100,000 in the arson case, meaning 10%, or $10,000, must be paid to secure his release from jail.
