Morning Lookout

Editor’s note: The system we use to send emails is having some personal problems, and we are unable to send Morning Lookout as usual. Had you received it, here’s what it would have looked like …

Good morning,

Lilly St. Angelo was at the 4J school board meeting last night, where it appears the district will face another $30 million budget deficit next year. The reasons are the same as this year: fewer students, the end of pandemic-related funding and state support that’s not keeping up with rising costs.

The campaign for the Ward 4 council seat in Springfield took an unusual turn yesterday, when one candidate, Jill Cuadros, joined by current and former Springfield elected officials, stood in front of City Hall and called for more respect in the election. Cuadros spoke of incidents during the campaign, including someone coming onto her property without permission and the removal of some of her campaign signs. The other candidate, Callee Ackland, said Cuadros and her campaign were “attempting to manufacture a scandal.” Our Springfield reporter, Lillian Schrock-Clevenger, reports.

Also in elections news, contributor Will Yurman has a rundown on the mayoral race in Florence, where three candidates are vying for the post.

On to football: The Ducks offense is what it is at this point. But is Oregon good enough everywhere else to keep in the hunt? Ken Woody and Tyson Alger break it down in their weekly video chat.

Our things to do this week include a mushroom extravaganza at Mount Pisgah, free live music and a bloody good rock ‘n’ roll musical. Leo Heffron has those and much more.

Stories you might have missed Wednesday …
• Prior to DUII arrest, Ducks wide receiver had license suspended for missing court dates
• Top staff lawyer warned CleanLane project posed ‘existential threat’ to Lane County
• Springfield, 4J had big drops in student enrollment this school year
