A 61-year-old man was pronounced dead Monday evening after being pulled from the Willamette River, a Springfield police sergeant said.
Eugene Springfield Fire Department deployed a rescue boat after someone at Island Park called for help, Sgt. Brian Keetle said Tuesday. A witness had reported someone in the water but not moving, Keetle said.
By the time police arrived, “the fire department had already pulled the victim from the river, and that subject was deceased,” Keetle said.
“We were able to contact some people that knew the victim and were aware that this person had been swimming in the river maybe an hour or two prior to when the fire department responded,” Kettle said.
The Lane County Medical Examiner will investigate further, he said.
“There was nothing that would give indication that there was foul play or somebody else involved or anything like that,” Kettle said.
“It just sounds like maybe an unfortunate accident, given the time of year, and unfortunately, we see these things kind of happen as people start getting into the river,” perhaps affected by the heat or unprepared for the river, Kettle said.
Authorities did not release the name of the victim, pending notification of next of kin.
The death appears to mark the second drowning in the Willamette in a span of five days, following the death of Amy Hastie after she lost a float near Knickerbocker Bridge in Eugene.
