QuickTake:
Amy Hastie was pulled from the river July 3 and then rushed to the hospital by fire crews, but she did not survive, the hospital and family members say.
A woman has died after she was swept into the Willamette River current on the evening of July 3.
Amy Hastie was underwater for about 10 minutes after she lost a float near Knickerbocker Bridge in Eugene, according to a press release from Eugene Springfield Fire. Her identity was confirmed July 8 by a spokesperson from PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend, where she was taken after being pulled from the river.
A bystander performed CPR on Hastie before fire crews arrived, continued resuscitation and rushed her to the hospital.
Hastie’s family posted a GoFundMe account to help cover funeral expenses. A spokesperson from GoFundMe verified the authenticity of the post.
Friends and family have shared the GoFundMe post on social media, remembering Hastie as a mother, and saying they are “truly at a loss for words.”
The stretch of the Willamette between Clearwater Park in Springfield and Alton Baker Park in Eugene is known for hidden hazards.
A low-head dam near Day Island creates a drop that has flipped rafts and trapped swimmers, though the Lane County Sheriff’s Office said it was not a factor in Hastie’s drowning.
The current in both the Willamette and McKenzie rivers also carries downed trees, submerged branches and other debris that can pin people underwater, as seen in a separate July 5 rescue. That incident ended with no injuries.
