Amid the ongoing federal government shutdown, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits may run out Nov. 1. More than 75,000 Lane County residents rely on the program, known as SNAP.
Food for Lane County, the largest nonprofit food bank serving Lane County, lists on its website 59 locations in the county where people in need can get free meals or food to take home.
Agency leaders note, however, that federal reductions in the food supply have already left Food for Lane County struggling to meet current demand for services. The nonprofit is asking for food, monetary donations and volunteers in advance of what they anticipate to be increased demand.
