What a crazy society we’ve become! Republican megadonors will spend close to $1 billion on the midterm elections. Elon Musk has already spent nearly $400 million this election cycle. That is only what’s been disclosed. All of that spent to keep his profitable government projects. All of this money, which could feed every needy citizen in our country, is being spent to continue mean and greedy policies that take away food, healthcare and a chance at success from the vast majority of our citizens in order to enrich a very small group of citizens.

And this isn’t just a national practice. We have the same attempts to buy political influence and acquire more power right here in our area. Lane County Commissioner Heather Buch, for example, faces an opponent in Jake Pelroy who received more than $100,000 from one local donor and her limited liability companies.

This same donor was a major contributor to two other Lane County commissioners who, after her generous gifts, decided in her favor regarding an unpermitted house she built along the McKenzie River.

These two Lane County Commissioners decided it was not a problem. They instead should have investigated the numerous contractors who put in roads and buildings without permits. Any other nonwealthy donor I doubt would have received this same favorable decision.
