Although I love the map that accompanied the article about bicycle thefts in Eugene/Springfield, there is more information I would like to see. For example, were the bikes locked or unlocked when they were stolen? I’d also like to know if the bicycles have been recovered without having to click on each individual icon.
Some personal observations:
An acquaintance had her bicycle stolen and while she was able to locate it and confront the thief, by the time she got it back, the bike was damaged beyond repair. The thieves tried to strip parts off that required special tools, which they did not have.
Riding my bicycle on the Delta Highway path last year, we rode by a camp at this location.
There, we observed three gentlemen with disassembled bicycles and a giant lock cutter. It’s not rocket science to figure out what was going on.
Yesterday, while driving through town, I saw what appeared to be about a 50-year-old pickup with an old utility trailer that had miscellaneous bicycle parts in it.
Are officers actively engaged in trying to locate bicycle chop operations? Are individuals who are observed carrying multiple bicycle parts that appear to have been removed from different bicycles questioned?
With a million dollars of bike theft in the first six months of the year in our area, it seems that perhaps a few more questions could be asked.
