As I read the coverage of Bo Wiedenfeld-Needham’s intention to run in the Democratic primary against Rep. Val Hoyle, I couldn’t help but shake my head as – yet again – here was a man (yes, it is usually a man) with no prior elected or public service experience, deciding he could do this highly qualified and accomplished woman’s job better than her.
I see nothing in Wiedenfeld-Needham’s background to indicate he has the qualifications, skills or temperament to serve in Congress. Running a business, or even several, is decidedly not the same as working within a large national democratic institution as the representative of a large and very diverse congressional district.
Hoyle has served in public office in different roles for more than 15 years, earning the trust of voters by doing the hard work of learning their core issues and seeking to improve their lives. This form of public service demands immense effort, dedication and sacrifice. It is not to be undertaken on a whim of ego or in a fit of pique because you didn’t like a vote your representative took.
Perhaps Wiedenfeld-Needham would prove to be a great representative, but no one can tell at this point because he hasn’t done a single thing to demonstrate that. Political activism with our local 50501 chapter is important and praiseworthy but not sufficient experience.
Put in some real work, Wiedenfeld-Needham, perhaps by serving on a local or statewide board or commission before launching a bid for higher elected office. Show us you have what it takes to serve your community with the same level of commitment and integrity that Hoyle has achieved.
Until then, please sir, sit down.
