Oregon’s top musical theater kids will descend on downtown Eugene next month for the Hult High School Musical Theatre Awards, a high-stakes awards ceremony and showcase recognizing the state’s best performances and stagecraft.

This year marks the first Hult High School Musical Theatre Awards. The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. June 2, part of a larger, longer-running showcase competition for youth musical theater talent.
Evaluators for the nominees watched and scored each submitted musical, grading the shows for different aspects of the productions. (Schools detail their production budgets, to inform evaluators on any individual school’s available resources to fund the production.)
Two students from the Hult Awards will be named state winners for outstanding performers in a lead role. They will become Oregon’s representatives at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, often called the Jimmys, on June 22 in New York City.
The Jimmys, which began as a ceremony in 2009, are known as the most prestigious awards in American youth theater. Winners and participants have gone on to careers on Broadway and beyond; “Mean Girls” actress and pop star Reneé Rapp won a top prize in 2018.
