QuickTake:

Local business owners express frustration but say it's not a normal occurrence downtown.

Springfield police arrested a man June 22 on criminal mischief charges in connection with a series of broken glass windows and doors at six Main Street businesses in downtown.

Sara Dubick, co-owner of Vinyl and Pine, said one of their windows had been broken.

“It’s upsetting and stressful as a new business, or you know, any business, but a new business, especially, to deal with that for the first time,” Dubick said. Vinyl and Pine opened in April. “We were just really grateful that nothing was stolen.”

She and her partner cleaned up the glass and went to Jerry’s Home Improvement Center for materials to cover the window so they could open the shop that day. She said their business neighbors were supportive and checked to see if they needed help.

“And they let us know this is not a common occurrence,” she said. “And things are still safe, and we can feel like our store is safe.”

Lisa Kamins, office manager at Plank Town Brewing Co., said the vandalism sent shards of glass into the restaurant.

“It’s frustrating to see a financial hit for a repair on a window when it’s already a trying time for the restaurant industry,” Kamins said. “We were fortunate to get it quickly repaired but it came at a cost.

“Downtown Springfield has become a really wonderful space through the years, and it’s frustrating when one person’s actions try to take away from the incredible businesses we have in this community,” she added.

According to police, at about 3 a.m. on Sunday, June 22, callers reported seeing a man on Main Street downtown removing lattice from walls and ripping out planters and throwing them in the street. The man also allegedly flipped over a bench and tipped over construction cones.

Police found the man, whom they identified as Garrett Hunter Snellings, 23, and arrested him on disorderly conduct charges.

Later that morning, police became aware of broken windows or doors at Plank Town Brewing, Antique Peddlers, Vinyl and Pine, Bright Oaks Meats, Cannabis and Hashstoria.

Officers allege Snellings is the suspect after reviewing video surveillance footage. He faces felony and misdemeanor criminal mischief charges. He was booked into the Lane County Jail.
