Lookout Eugene-Springfield’s article on the Ward 3 City Council race was helpful in highlighting the differences between the candidates.
Although both are Democrats, only Jennifer Smith has been endorsed by the Democratic Party of Lane County. She’s also been endorsed by the current councilman, Alan Zelenka, and by the Oregon Working Families Party and multiple labor unions and environmental groups.
In my view, what it comes down to is a clear choice: Smith is the only truly progressive candidate. She cares deeply about protecting democracy, climate action, human rights and fighting for the rights of individuals. As a union leader, Smith regularly stands up for workers grappling with kitchen-table issues such as rising costs of living and housing shortages.
Her opponent is a businessman who seeks to bring a business-driven perspective to the council. He is backed by business interests, timber leaders and the Eugene Chamber of Commerce.
The election is May 19 and ballots were recently sent out. Please make your voice heard.
