QuickTake:
The three races — a 5K Saturday morning, and the half and full marathons that run concurrently Sunday morning — sold out earlier than ever, three months before the events.
Organizers of the Eugene Marathon are expecting a crowd.
Becky Radliff, the marathon’s director of marketing and events, said this year’s Eugene Marathon and half marathon races Sunday, April 26 have 1,500 more people registered than last year. Depending on the no-show rate, organizers are predicting about 10,000 finishers.
Last year, the marathon and half marathon had about 8,500 finishers.
The 5K, to be held Saturday, April 25, had nearly 2,300 finishers last year, and organizers expect that race to be about the same size.
According to Radliff:
- All 50 states will be represented among the entrants.
- Runners from 27 countries will be racing this weekend, including 116 from Mexico and 142 from Canada.
- 1,889 runners in the marathon and half marathon identified themselves as residents of Eugene and Springfield.
- An additional 1,809 residents of Eugene and Springfield are running the 5K or the Duck Dash (the 1-kilometer race for kids between the ages of 2 and 12.)
- 20 charities have runners in the race, raising money for different causes. When the races sold out in January, more than 1,000 “new runners signed up for a charity bib in exchange for their commitment to fundraise,” according to race materials. As of April 13, those charity runners had raised more than $560,000.
The 5K on Saturday starts at 8 a.m. on Agate Street outside of Hayward Field. Some roads in the neighborhood will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. between Alder and Agate and 13th and 24th avenues.
The marathon and half marathon start at 7 a.m. Sunday, and some Eugene neighborhoods will be affected as early as 6 a.m. and as late as 2 p.m.
Springfield, too, will have road closures as late as 11 a.m. The complete list of road closures is available on the race’s website.
Road races nationwide are experiencing a boom, and the local marathon is no different. The Eugene Marathon is popular for its mostly flat course, its finish line on the track at Hayward Field and the varied course that goes through city streets and Alton Baker Park. Plus, it looks good on social media.
