Lane County girls basketball squads race toward postseason play

Lane County girls basketball teams are hoping to notch another victory or two before postseason play gets fully underway — and some games this week may change the playoff picture. Here are two of this week’s key matchups:

• North Bend at Cottage Grove, 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19: Just 16 teams qualify for the state 4A playoffs, and Cottage Grove’s Lions are on the bubble, with a No. 15 ranking from the Oregon School Activities Association. Beating No. 7 North Bend would boost Cottage Grove’s postseason chances. 
• Eagle Point at North Eugene, 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20: Only 16 teams make the cut for the state 5A playoffs, and the Midwestern League gets to send just three teams to the postseason. The first two spots are already spoken for, with Springfield and Crater. No. 16 Eagle Point and No. 15 North Eugene are in third and fourth place, respectively, and so this Friday’s game could loom large in setting the postseason field.
