Today is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent,

Our partners at the Oregon Capital Chronicle have a look at the work of the Oregon Legislature’s Democratic majority to pass an “immigration justice package.” The bills range from prohibiting federal agents from wearing face coverings to helping pay low-income immigrants’ legal fees.

Our food and dining correspondent Taylor Goebel is still new to Lane County, and what better way learn more about her beat than to eat? That’s what she’s doing, and she’s sharing what she thinks along the way. In her new feature, Down the Block, Taylor highlights one block and shares food you should try. Her first stop? Alder and 13th streets, where you can taste multiple cuisines without crossing traffic.

Springfield Economic Development Agency has plans for the Glenwood riverfront and is hosting a public meeting Thursday to talk about the project. Lillian Schrock-Clevenger has the details.

Also:

Seeking a good fish fry:  A reminder that we are compiling a list of places in Lane County that offer fish fries during Lent. Know a place? Email Taylor at taylor@lookoutlocal.com, and we will publish a list Friday.

And thank you to those who wrote to assure me – I mean my friend – that it’s OK to still have a Christmas tree up.

Stories you might have missed Tuesday …

Hope you are recovered from Fat Tuesday,

— Dann
