Nate Jackson, a social studies teacher at Bethel’s Willamette High School, has been honored as one of Oregon’s 17 regional teachers of the year. Ben Botkin talked to Jackson, who has also emceed athletic events with thousands in attendance. Jackson told Ben that becoming a teacher allowed him to use some of the same skills: “I said to myself, ‘Wait a minute! This looks exactly like a crowd that I would present in front of, except instead of 60,000 (people), it’s 20.’”
On the subject of schools: It’s the season when we learn the results of all that standardized testing in Oregon schools.
- Lilly St. Angelo reports on the latest release of test-score data for the Eugene 4J, Springfield and Bethel school districts. In short, 4J maintained the highest proficiency percentages across all subjects, exceeding state averages. Springfield showed the largest gains.
- If you want to see how your particular school measures up, Lilly also has compiled a searchable table with building-by-building results.
- Finally, Oregon Capital Chronicle looks at overall state numbers: They are inching upward, but remain well below the pre-COVID levels.
