Activists are working to get an initiative called the Eugene Clean Energy Fund on the ballot in November. Today they delivered boxes of about 14,000 signatures to Eugene City Hall. That’s thousands more than the 8,726 valid signatures required. As our climate intern Leo Brown reports, the initiative would charge a fee on corporations earning annual profits of more than $1 billion nationwide and more than $500,000 within Eugene. The money collected would pay for local clean energy and climate resilience projects.
Speaking of fees — and with a data-center boom going gangbusters — the state of Oregon is looking at new and increased fees for users of undersea fiber optic cables that run across the seabed off Oregon’s coast. Some of that money would help fund education in the state. Our friends at Oregon Capital Chronicle have the story.

The driver of a pickup truck involved in a fatal crash with a car on Highway 99 in Eugene in 2022 was sentenced Monday to three years in prison. Jaime Adame reports that while court documents said Diane Marie Davis, who was killed, bore some fault in the collision, evidence also suggests the defendant, Curtis Dewayne Smith, was driving 80 mph.
