Sharon Schuman, 79, of Eugene, was killed Wednesday after she was struck by a Toyota RAV4 that jumped the curb, while jogging on the Amazon Trail.
Police identified the driver as Scott Shawn Stolarczyk, 51, of Eugene. The driver was transported to a local hospital. His condition is not known.
According to police: The driver was traveling about 9:45 a.m. in the 2500 block of Amazon Parkway when he lost control of his vehicle. The car traveled over the grass, crashed into a tree, and rolled into the Amazon slough. The driver was initially trapped inside but crawled out through the back window.
The Amazon Parkway was closed between 24th and 27th streets for nearly four hours while police investigated and the car was towed.
The Amazon Trail is among the most popular in the Eugene Parks and Open Space system, according to a spokesperson for Eugene’s public works department. The 1-mile bark chip loop is well lit, and hundreds of runners, from Olympic-caliber athletes to joggers and walkers, use the path daily.
The Eugene Marathon and Half Marathon course will run on the Amazon Parkway, past the scene of the crash, Sunday.
