Eugene police rushed to the area of Sheldon High School and the school was placed on lockdown Tuesday, Oct. 27, after a person was seen nearby pointing a rifle that turned out to be a pellet gun, police said.
“It was a quick response and well-handled by police, and we’re grateful for that,” said Kelly McIver, a spokesperson for Eugene School District 4J.
A 15-year-old Sheldon High School student and a 16-year-old North Eugene High School student were each cited for disorderly conduct, police said.
Police received a report at 12:50 p.m. of a passenger in a car pointing what appeared to be a rifle through the vehicle’s windshield, according to a Eugene police news release. The vehicle’s driver appeared to be throwing items at a trailing vehicle, according to police.
A witness reported the vehicle pulling into a lot at Sheldon, leading to the police and school response.
Police said the vehicle was not found upon the arrival of officers to Sheldon High, but it was later was located at North Eugene High School with the pellet rifle and scope inside the vehicle.
McIver said information about the incident was sent to families of students at Sheldon and North Eugene high schools.
