QuickTake:
Eugene, Springfield and Lane County offer leaf pickup, starting next week. The schedule depends on the neighborhood.
Leaf pickup started in the 1960s in Lane County as a flood control measure to prevent leaves from clogging storm drains. The program continues to this day to manage the area’s leaf debris, keep decaying leaves out of local waterways and prevent cyclists from slipping on slimy leaves in bike lanes.
Here’s how you can make sure leaves get to the right place at the right time.
Eugene
The city asks that leaves be collected in piles and placed in the street next to the curb, as long as they do not block a bike lane or are placed between parked cars. Leaves do not need to be bagged for collection. Residents have two weekend days to get their leaves out in each zone. Pickup begins the Monday following.

A second round of city-wide leaf pickups is planned for January.
Springfield
To get your leaves picked up in Springfield, the city requires the following:
- Collect leaves in medium-sized garbage bags.
- Gather only leaves in bags. If the bags contain any other yard debris, they can’t be used for compost and will not be picked up.
- Place bags at the curbside, not in the street, by 7 a.m. Monday of the week your neighborhood is scheduled for pick up.

If you live West of 28th/31st Street, the first round begins Monday, Dec. 1, and the second round begins Monday, Jan. 5.
If you live east of 28th/31st Street, the first round begins Monday, Dec. 8, and the second round begins Monday, Jan. 12.
Not all bags will be picked up on Mondays, however. It may take several days for all bags to be collected. Severe weather may also cause delays.
Springfield warns residents not to blow piles of leaves onto the street, as it forces vehicles and cyclists out of their lanes and violates city code.
Lane County
If you aren’t in Eugene or Springfield’s city limits, you may be zoned for Lane County leaf collection, as detailed in an interactive map.
- If you live in Zone A (Santa Clara north of Irving Road and west of River Road), the first round of pickup is from Nov. 3 to Nov. 6, and the second round is from Nov. 24 to Nov. 26.
- If you live in Zone B (Santa Clara north of Hunsaker Lane and east of River Road), the first round of pickup is from Nov. 12 to Nov. 13, and the second round is from Dec. 1 to Dec. 4.
- If you live in Zone C (Springfield in unincorporated areas within the urban growth boundary), the first round of pickup is from Nov. 17 to Nov. 20, and the second round is from Dec. 8 to 11.
The county asks for leaves to be collected in piles, not in bags, on the street. Piles must not be near parked cars, trash cans, over gutters, or have any other yard waste in them besides leaves.
