QuickTake:
The 36-year-old man was arrested outside a car that police suggested was involved in a fatal hit-and-run a day earlier. But the man, Edgar Solorio Lopez, has not been charged in that case.
A 36-year-old Springfield man charged with second-degree murder after a fatal stabbing appeared Monday, Aug. 10, via a jail video link for his first appearance before a judge.
Edgar Solorio Lopez faces the charge in connection with a stabbing police said took place at about 2 p.m. Friday in the 2800 block of Gateway Street, an area that includes a shopping center.
Springfield police said the stabbing suspect drove away, but a witness followed the vehicle and shared information with police.
Officers and an Oregon State Police trooper located Lopez standing outside a white 2011 Nissan Murano. Police said in a statement Friday the Murano had body damage “consistent with damage observed and expected to be found on the suspect vehicle in a fatal Hit and Run incident.”
In that collision, a married couple walking on Sixth Street in Springfield were struck twice by an unidentified driver Thursday. The collisions killed 73-year-old Randall Alan Fultz and caused life-threatening injuries to 73-year-old Pamela Anne Fultz, police said.
The next morning, Springfield police released images of a white crossover SUV they said were from a witness. Police asked the public for help identifying the vehicle.
Lopez, however, does not face any charges other than the second-degree murder count in connection with the stabbing. As of Monday afternoon, no criminal charges had been filed in the hit-and-run.
Monday, Lopez wore a green, sleeveless garment that appeared to have some padding. Such a garment is meant to protect those wearing it from self-harm.
Lane County Circuit Judge Curtis Conover asked a standing Lopez if he was Edgar Lopez.
“Yes, I am,” Lopez said. He did not speak again, and did not enter any plea.
Conover set Lopez’s next court appearance for Sept. 14.
Springfield police Monday did not release any additional details about the stabbing, including the name of the victim.
