Firefighters continued to work Wednesday, Aug. 12, on a 25-acre wildfire burning roughly 16 miles south of Cottage Grove on land protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry.

The Harness 1310 Fire — initially named Big Baldy Fire — ignited in the early afternoon of Tuesday, spreading quickly through timber and logging debris, said Jessica Neujahr, an Oregon Department of Forestry public information officer. It was earlier reported the fire was 55 acres, but that estimate was revised.

Earlier Wednesday, fire crews laid hose and built a line around the fire, she said. Around 80 firefighters were working on scene Wednesday.

No homes are currently threatened and no injuries were reported, she said. The fire is about halfway between Eugene and Roseburg, in the Cascade foothills near the border of Lane and Douglas counties. It’s the biggest wildfire of the season thus far in Lane County.

The Department of Forestry and the Douglas Forest Protective Association are working together on the blaze, along with an operator representing Weyerhaeuser, which owns timberland in the area, Neujahr said.

The response from both agencies includes three bulldozers, nine engines, multiple water tenders, a 15-person hand crew, seven helicopters, and an air attack plane — which coordinates operations from above.

“Our air attack is like the eyes in the sky,” Neujahr said. “They help coordinate between the air resources and the ground resources. … They’re throwing it all at it right now because they don’t want to give it any more fuel.”

“They are definitely doing their best to get around it quickly to just stop it before it becomes a problem,” she said. “They’re making some good progress on it, but it is still a very active fire, so they have a lot of work to do.”

The fire’s cause is still under investigation.
