Lane County Sheriff’s Office investigators have found “no indication of a crime” leading up to the death of a 55-year-old man whose body was found in the storm drainage system of a residential Santa Clara neighborhood.

In a statement Tuesday, Aug. 11, the office said investigators reviewed video evidence showing Treloggen entering the storm drain himself.

“Detectives reviewed footage and confirmed that Treloggen was alone when he appeared to open the grate and enter the drain. Once inside the storm drain Treloggen was unable to remove himself,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. The statement did not say when the video was taken.

Eugene Springfield Fire and the sheriff’s office responded to the intersection of Lantana Avenue and Dahlia Lane after receiving a phone call just after 5:45 a.m. Thursday.

“They saw part of a person sticking out of a manhole,” Sgt. Levi McKenny, a sheriff’s office spokesman, said Thursday, describing the initial report from the citizen.

An earlier sheriff’s office statement, released Monday, did not include any information about how Treloggen possibly ended up below street level in a confined space no more than 3 feet wide, and said the death remained under investigation: “The investigation is still ongoing, but so far there is no indication of a crime leading up to Treloggen’s death,” the sheriff’s office said Monday. 

A storm grate normally covers the space where Treloggen was found.

Terloggen’s body was taken to the Lane County Morgue, which is under the jurisdiction of the Lane County medical examiner’s office, the sheriff’s office said.

The death remains under investigation by both the sheriff’s office and the medical examiner, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday.

On Thursday a resident told Lookout Eugene-Springfield she saw first responders pull out a man’s body feet first from the storm drainage area.

“It was sad, and it was scary,” said Tammy Nyjordet, adding that the man’s face appeared muddy.
