A 23-year-old Eugene man being held in the Lane County Jail faces new charges after reportedly punching a deputy in the face Thursday, April 30, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office said.
Reid Michael Squires continued striking the deputy until another person in jail custody intervened, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. The injured deputy had been securing cell doors during “dayroom time,” which involves giving those in custody access to a common area, the sheriff’s office said.
“The deputy sustained significant injuries requiring care at an area hospital. She has since been discharged but is still recovering from her injuries,” the sheriff’s office said.
Squires already faced charges including first-degree rape, and Friday he was charged in Lane County Circuit Court with second-degree assault and assaulting a public safety officer, both felonies.
