Eugene police on Tuesday, July 22 arrested a man suspected of child sex abuse after tracking him to Veneta, where a Lane County Sheriff’s Office deputy recalled a man matching his description living in a homeless encampment, according to a statement Thursday from Eugene police.

Reid Michael Squires, 23, has been charged in Lane County Circuit Court with first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy and two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, according to online court records.

Eugene police on July 18 took a report of alleged sex crimes against a child. The family of an early elementary-school aged child reportedly confronted Squires about the alleged abuse, according to a statement from Eugene police, resulting in Squires leaving his residence in Eugene.

After Eugene police secured a search warrant and information was issued to local law enforcement agencies about Squires, the deputy recalled a man resembling Squires, according to the Eugene police statement.

On Tuesday, Eugene officers and Lane County sheriff’s deputies searched Veneta, about 15 miles west of Eugene, finding Squires near a public pool and taking him into custody after police say he provided a false name. Squires has not yet entered a plea in court, according to online court records.
