A 40-year-old man has been indicted on a charge of first-degree manslaughter after a fatal confrontation in Springfield.
Taron Daniel Daly has also been charged with unlawful use of a weapon, specifically a knife or cutting tool, among other charges, according to the indictment filed Friday, Oct. 30, in Lane County Circuit Court.
Daly is charged in connection with the death of Levi Lynch, 39, after Springfield police responded a few minutes after 5:30 p.m., Sept. 28, to 50th Place, just south of Main Street.
Police have released few details about Lynch’s death.
Lynch’s sister, Lacy Lane, told Lookout Eugene-Springfield that from what she had heard, an act of violence against Lynch’s girlfriend started a chain of events leading up to the fatal stabbing of her brother.
“Levi ran up to defend her,” Lane told Lookout last month. She said her brother was a father of two and devoted uncle to her oldest son.
Daly has also been charged with fourth-degree domestic violence assault and felony coercion, according to court documents.
Prosecutors filed a notice Monday stating that Daly was on probation or post-prison supervision at the time of the alleged manslaughter. If convicted, Daly could possibly receive a longer sentence should he be found to have committed the crimes while under supervision.
First-degree manslaughter involves acting recklessly and “manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life,” according to Oregon law. A conviction, under Oregon’s Measure 11 law, results in a minimum prison sentence of 10 years with no parole or reduction of sentence allowed.
