Sy’s Pizza owner to open Hawaiian eatery near UO campus
University of Oregon students and staff will soon have a cheap new dining option on Alder Street. Sy’s New York Pizza owner Josh Zweifler is opening a casual Hawaiian eatery next door, at the former Sweet Basil Express, a Thai restaurant that closed in October. He plans to open Quack Shack Hawaiian Grill in November. The eatery will be open daily from early morning to late night to accommodate students.
Quack Shack will serve choose-your-own plates with protein options such as kalua pork, huli-huli chicken, loco moco (beef patties smothered in brown gravy) and tofu, plus rice and mac salad for sides. Zweifler is also dreaming up Spam fries and other creative munchies. Student-friendly drinks include drip coffee, cold brew and Red Bull drinks.
Cornucopia closes Pearl Street pub, keeps original location
In just two months, Cornucopia pulled the plug on two of its three locations in Eugene and Springfield. The American-style restaurant’s eatery on Pearl Street near 5th Street Public Market had its final service Oct. 18, after 17 years.
Cornucopia is planning to keep its original location at 295 W. 17th Ave. “for now,” per an Oct. 11 announcement. The American restaurant operated locations in Springfield and on Pearl Street for seven and 17 years, respectively. The restaurant first opened 27 years ago.
“We look forward to keep on serving up your favorite burgers, comfort food, salads and beverages. Hope to see your smiling faces soon,” the restaurant stated.
Oakshire to keep Eugene Public House under same owners
Rather than sell, Oakshire decided to keep its beloved — and most profitable — taproom, Public House in Eugene, under the same ownership while shifting production to a partner brewery. Founder Jeff Althouse told Lookout, “It made sense to keep this one location.”
The announcement came after more than a month of back-and-forth over Oakshire’s future, ranging from temporary closures to pulling the plug on the brewery’s three locations and selling the company.
