Firefighters were responding to the Jasper Creek Fire that was burning on Weyerhaeuser timberland Tuesday, Aug. 25, about 10 miles south of Cottage Grove near the border between Lane and Douglas counties.

The size of the blaze was estimated at about an acre, said Tim Hoffman, a spokesperson for the Oregon Department of Forestry, which fights wildfire on private timberlands.

Hoffman said at about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday that it “seems like they have it contained,” noting that things can change quickly.

The fire ignited at around 4 p.m. Tuesday, 3 miles east of Black Butte.

The Oregon Department of Forestry sent five engines, three helicopters, one air attack and two hand crews to the fire, Hoffman said.

Two weeks ago Aug. 11, the Harness 1310 Fire tore through 25 acres in that same area, making it the largest wildfire Lane County has seen this season.

Both the Oregon Department of Forestry and the Douglas Forest Protective Association responded swiftly to that fire, deploying engines, bulldozers, helicopters and a fixed-wing plane. No structures were burned and no evacuations took place.
