Bennett Williams’ breakout season with the Oregon Ducks is likely over.
The junior defensive back is having surgery to repair a broken fibula this afternoon, a source told The I-5 Corridor, and is expected to miss most of, if not all the remainder of the season. Williams suffered the injury Friday while decelerating during an onside kick drill at practice, just before the team left to face Stanford in Palo Alto.
“Freak injury,” said Oregon coach Mario Cristobal after Oregon’s 31-24 loss to Stanford in overtime on Saturday.
Williams had three interceptions and 20 tackles through Oregon’s first four games. His two interceptions — one returned for a touchdown — against Arizona earned him Pac-12 defensive player of the week honors just a week ago.
Williams, in his second year with the Ducks, was a former freshman All-American at Illinois who played all seven games for Oregon during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He started camp in 2021 second on the depth chart at nickel back behind Jamal Hill, was named starter for Week 1 after Hill’s suspension and few on UO’s defense had made a larger impact through the season’s first month.
Hill had 20 tackles and two interceptions with four pass breakups in six games in 2020. He had eight tackles in place of Williams on Saturday.
Oregon is tied for third nationally with nine interceptions this season.
