I virtually attended the Springfield City Council meeting on April 20 that featured the selection of an interim councilor for the open Ward 4 position.

Instead of seeing our democracy at work, I witnessed the City Council blatantly discounting the people’s will.

I witnessed wishy-washy and off-the-cuff decision-making to reach the magic number of four votes to pick not the first, not the second, but the third choice (or a “compromise”) candidate. A candidate who, according to media reports, received only two of the 39 support letters in the City Council agenda packet. A candidate who reportedly admitted surprise at being selected.

I witnessed City Council members bristle over being called in to diversify the council while dismissing the need to have representation for younger constituents and constituents who are not homeowners. I witnessed an absurd use of a “Mister Rogers” quote to question the motives and authenticity of a candidate, and portray them as compromised for supporting the public library. As if supporting the public library creates more bias than say, being in commercial banking.

I witnessed limited-to-no checks or balances of this circus from any of the leaders. It’s obvious the Springfield City Council’s allegiance is to maintaining the status quo — not representing the breadth of their community. It’s time for Springfield citizens to put each of them on notice.

To the City Council: We see you. We elect you. We can and will replace you.
