What is happening to our country? I’m deeply troubled by the fact that our elected officials seem unwilling — or afraid — to hold President Donald Trump accountable. His presidency has been marked by a relentless campaign of terror and revenge against those he believes wronged him. Where is the courage to stand up for what is right and lawful?
Our leaders swore to protect our rights and uphold the Constitution. Yet many remain silent while actions that appear blatantly illegal go unchecked. This silence is not just disappointing — it’s dangerous.
Recently, I told a friend something I never imagined I’d say: For the first time in my life, I’m grateful I won’t be around much longer to witness the long-term damage being done by this so-called president. Trump behaves like a dictator, disregarding laws and norms and facing little resistance. His campaign promises were riddled with falsehoods, and few — if any — have been fulfilled. We are watching our democracy unravel in real time.
Is this truly how we want our country to be seen? Once respected and admired globally, we are now mocked and avoided. The world is distancing itself from us, and I fear we are losing our moral and democratic compass.
We’ve placed a felon in the White House while denying felons the right to vote. What kind of message does that send?
I pray that those with integrity, courage and a sense of morality will rise and speak out. U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley deserves recognition and praise for his unwavering stand. He has shown the heart and bravery that our nation desperately needs right now.
Let us not remain silent. Let us demand better.
