Police responded to multiple 911 calls at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to the alley near Grant Street and West 10th Avenue in west Eugene, where they found Kalamas.
Neighbors told Lookout Eugene-Springfield they heard at least three gunshots, and that groups of five to 10 people often gathered in the alley and could be seen using drugs.Â
Officers responding to the gunfire found another person who appeared to have overdosed on drugs. The person was able to be revived with Narcan, Lt. Jeremy Williams said Tuesday.
Early Wednesday, police announced the arrest of 35-year-old Zachary Dale Hardie-Brazille, who was charged in Lane County Circuit Court with second-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Hardie-Brazille’s next court appearance is Wednesday, Nov. 4.
Kalamas’s death is the second fatal shooting this year to be investigated by Eugene police as a suspected murder.
LeAnna Pitts, 52, director of work management and administrative support within the University of Oregon’s Campus Planning and Facilities Management team, was found fatally shot in her home Oct. 1 in south Eugene.
Police arrested her husband, Gregory Allen Pitts, 55, and he pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder.
