A two-alarm fire that began in a vacant home Sunday, Aug. 9, spread to nearby businesses along Highway 99 in west Eugene, fire officials said.

No injuries were reported, according to Eugene Springfield Fire.

Firefighters responded at about 6:30 p.m. to find a home engulfed in flames east of railroad tracks that run alongside the 1800 block of Highway 99, according to a news release.

The fire had already spread to dry vegetation between the tracks and Highway 99 businesses, leading fire crews to request additional engine companies to help stop the fire.

Fire scorched the rear and roof of Emerald Pool and Patio, on the 1800 block of Highway 99, and also caused damage to exterior displays and vegetation, fire officials said.

A nearby storage building and an office for a neighboring car dealership also sustained exterior fire damage before firefighters could put out the blaze. Other items including lawn mowers outside a small-engine repair business also sustained damage, fire officials said.

The fire caused a shutdown of Highway 99 to allow firefighters access to additional water. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, fire officials said.

Fire officials said it was the third fire Sunday to start near railroad tracks, including a brush fire at about 9:30 a.m. along Highway 99 and a fire that began at about 7:30 a.m. in the area of Franklin Boulevard and Walnut Street.
