The Oregon Department of Transportation is postponing a full closure of the Springfield Main Street Bridge until January, after receiving community feedback.
The department had intended to close the historic bridge between Glenwood and Springfield for repairs starting Dec. 1. The closure would have lasted three weeks.
“However, we heard concerns that any weather-related delays in December could significantly affect holiday travel,” Mindy McCartt, a spokesperson for the department, wrote in an email to Lookout Eugene-Springfield. “To avoid that risk and reduce potential impacts on the community, the contractor adjusted the schedule so the full closure will now begin in early January 2026.”
Repairs will include removing and replacing the bridge surface, replacing the joints, repaving the road east of the bridge and adding a bike ramp. The total cost for design and construction is estimated at $4.29 million.
Crews have started building the detour road at the bridge. During the full bridge closure, both directions of traffic will use the South A Street bridge. Westbound traffic will take a left turn off of Main Street onto South Mill Street to get onto South A Street. It will then use a temporary connection to the roundabout.
