QuickTake:

Christopher Smith, director of instruction at Eugene Country Club, shot under par but failed to quality for the 2025 Senior Open in England.

Eugene golf pro Christopher Smith shot a 1-under par 70 Monday, July 21, at Camberley Heath Golf Club in Camberley, England.

That was good enough to tie for 13th in a field of 138 senior golfers trying to qualify for the 2025 Senior Open, but not enough to make it to Sunningdale Golf Club.

The 62-year-old Smith, director of instruction at the Eugene Country Club and holder of the Guinness World Record for speed golf since 2005, thought he’d have a “pretty good chance” at qualifying for Europe’s only senior major tournament if he shot under par. Still, he would have needed to shoot his goal of 67 to qualify.

Only four golfers in the round qualified: Rob Labritz, 54, a senior instructor at GlenArbor Golf Club in Bedford Hills, New York, shot a 6-under par 65; Richard Warburton and Gary Wolstenholme, both of England, shot 66; and Andre Bossert, of Switzerland, shot 67.

The 2025 Senior Open starts Thursday, July 24, at Sunningdale Golf Club in Berkshire County west of London.

The qualifying round was one of four played Monday at separate courses in the area, as more than 550 senior golfers tried to qualify.

The top four scores from each round qualified, with the next two best scores qualifying as reserves.

Those 16 golfers will join the other 128 entrants who qualified under exemptions, such as former Senior Open winners K.J. Choi (2024), Miguel Angel Jimenez (2018) and Bernard Langer (2010, 2014, 2017, 2019); former winners of one of golf’s four majors, such as Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabel and Ernie Els; and top money-list players such as Retief Goosen, Ian Woosnam and Stuart Appleby.
