A new segment of Eugene’s Ridgeline Trail in South Eugene Meadows Park is open to the public.
The $1.5 million project, completed in July, features about 2.5 miles of new trail that form a 3.8-mile “lollipop loop” beginning at a newly constructed trailhead on the west side of Willamette Street and 52nd Avenue. The new trail, part of the 194-acre South Eugene Meadows Park, connects Willamette Street to Blanton Road and the Blanton Ridge Park to the northeast.
The trail is accessible for both hiking and cycling. Construction took about a year, beginning in August 2025. The project includes a new 34-vehicle parking lot at the Willamette Street trailhead, which the city expects to be open by September.
The city’s website states that the parking lot will feature “usual trailhead amenities,” like ADA parking, a gate locked at night, a security camera and a crosswalk with pedestrian-activated flashing lights for crossing Willamette Street.
The Eugene Parks Foundation raised $665,000 for the project. The $5.3 million 2023 Parks and Recreation levy will fund maintenance of the entire park.
Cyclists must turn off any electric-assist on their bicycles within park boundaries to comply with terms of a conservation easement on park property administered by the Bonneville Power Administration and the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board.
The city will schedule a grand opening celebration for the new trail later this year.
South Eugene Meadows Park features upland prairie and oak savanna and woodlands. The area was previously only accessible using informal footpaths from a small trailhead on Blanton Road southwest of the Blanton Ridge Trailhead. The new trail is part of Eugene’s Ridgeline Trail expansion.
