Shirley Ann Mitchell, age 87, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2026, in her hometown of Redding, California.  Shirley was born on January 23, 1939, in Eugene, Oregon.  Shirley spent her early years in Eugene and Pleasant Hill, graduating from Pleasant Hill High School in 1957.  Shirley spent countless hours at the Eugene County Club with Hellen, her mother, honing her craft.  From the time she was 13, golf was more than a hobby for Shirley; it was a lifelong love.  She won many golf tournaments in Oregon and Northern California in her career. In fact, she met her future husband, Ronald Dean Mitchell, of Medford at the Southern Oregon Golf Tournament in Medford.

Her incredible talent and fierce competitive drive brought her countless awards and trophies over the years, but her impact reached far beyond the scoreboard.  Shirley inspired fellow golfers and friends alike with her generous heart and unstoppable determination.  A proud member of the Riverview Country Club in Redding since 1965 alongside Ron, she truly dominated the green, claiming the title of women’s club champion an incredible 15 times.

Shirley carried a lifelong green thumb and an even bigger heart.  A passion for gardening — passed down from her parents and lovingly handed to the next generation — defined much of her days.  Whether she was tending her flowers, welcoming family, friends and neighbors into her green space, or hiding treats for her cherished family Easter egg hunts, her garden was a place of pure joy.  Shirley’s curiosity also took her around the world to explore famous gardens across Scotland, New Zealand, England, France, Canada and Hawaii.  Beyond the soil, her truest language of love was cooking, and she was happiest when sharing a warm meal and her generous spirit with the people she loved.

Shirley and Ron were married for 62 years. They shared many joyful times, including golf and traveling.  Together, they raised two children, Marcia and Greg, and their family continued to grow with the blessings of granddaughter Sara Dorman and great-granddaughter Madison Dorman.

Shirley touched the lives of many as a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and loyal friend.

Family members who hold her memory dear include daughter, Marcia Mitchell; son, Gregory (Monica) Mitchell; granddaughter, Sara Dorman; step-granddaughter, Rochelle (Jesse) Garcia; great-granddaughter, Madison Dorman; brother, Bob (Pat) Siegmund; niece, Stacie (Joe) Hawley; great-niece, Emma Hawley; and lifelong friends, Sharon Wallenburg and Christine Lowery.  Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Hellen Siegmund; her beloved husband, Ronald Mitchell; brother Tom (Margaret) Siegmund; and sister-in-law, Twila (Clem) Krenek.

Family was always at the heart of Shirley’s life.  Her warmth, support, and humor will be deeply missed by those who knew her best.  Her legacy remains in the memories lovingly shared by her family and friends, and in the example she set as a strong and compassionate woman.

Shirley’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
