Herbert Dean Cordin, known lovingly as “Herbie,” passed away on August 8, 2026, in Oregon at the age of 69.
He was born on July 19, 1957, in Cottage Grove, Oregon, to Kimsey and Mary Lou (McDonald) Cordin. Herbie grew up in Cottage Grove and graduated from Cottage Grove High School, where he began building the steady, hardworking character that would define his life.
Herbie married Sheila Ann Shewmaker on August 18, 1979, in Cottage Grove, Oregon, and together their marriage would have been 47 years this month. Their life together was built on companionship, and a deep commitment to family. He was a loving husband, a proud father, and a devoted grandfather whose greatest joy came from being present for the people he loved.
Herbie spent much of his working life in the timber industry, working in multiple timber and plywood mills before retiring after 25 years with Rosboro Lumber Company. His years of labor reflected hard work he brought to every part of his life.
Outside of work, Herbie found joy in the outdoors and he enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and going to the races. He was an avid Oregon Duck fan, and he also had a lasting appreciation for classic cars. Music was another part of his life, and he enjoyed playing the bass guitar at Coast Fork Church, where his faith and fellowship were important to him. Above all, he treasured time with his grandchildren and was a dedicated grandpa who could always be found at their sporting events, cheering them on.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila; his son, Michael (Lauren) Cordin; his son, Kevin (Natasha) Cordin; and his cherished grandchildren, Bailey, Josh, Chase, Kylee, and Rianne. He is also survived by his sisters, Eloise Hooper, Shirley Clark, Deloris Hartle, and Betty Yearwood; and his brothers, Bill Cordin, David Cordin, and Sam Cordin. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Margaret Tilley and Eva Ward; and his brothers, Leo Cordin, Danny Cordin, and Kim Cordin.
There will be a graveside service on Friday, August 21, 2026 at 11:00am at Sears Cemetery in Cottage Grove, Oregon. A potluck celebration will follow at Coast Fork Church.
Arrangements are in the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel and Crematorium.
