Good morning, Lookout Eugene-Springfield,

I’ve tagged in for Sarah this morning, who is taking some well-deserved time away.

About 150 people attended a forum Thursday night to discuss residential burglaries targeting the local Asian American population. Eugene Police Chief Chris Skinner called it “disheartening,” and officials described the pattern of crimes as extending to various parts of the state and even nationally. Jaime Adame and Michael Zhang were there.

Earlier in the day, Jaime watched as 25 people became United States citizens at a ceremony and formal oath-taking event. While all celebrated the moment, some reflected on the meaning of American citizenship in today’s political climate.

Tyson Alger tells the story of Harvey “Suds” Sutherland, an Oregon pitcher, who was flying high until a Walter Johnson fastball and a feud between Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth ended his Major League Baseball career as quickly as it started.

Need to go to Chicago? United is adding a daily nonstop flight starting in April 2026. A direct return flight is also coming.

Finally, the storm set to move through the area today and tomorrow, bringing with it a hefty amount of rain, will not stop Saturday’s Halloween celebration downtown. Grace Chinowsky called the city Thursday afternoon, and they said plans are still a go, but you might want to bring a raincoat, umbrella, or both.

And if you come downtown, be sure to visit the Lookout Eugene-Springfield office at 771 Willamette. We are going to take portraits of all the great costumes in our photo studio, and you can check out our new sign.
