Good evening,
The Eugene City Council discussed a proposed ordinance that would make it illegal to hand money or other items out of a car to a person standing alongside the road or on a street corner. Some councilors said the ordinance was a way to avoid dangerous traffic situations. Others said it was an unnecessary way to penalize homeless people. The mayor ended up breaking a 4-4 tie vote to advance the proposal to the next step, which will be a public hearing. Grace Chinowsky was there.
Grace also reports on the resignation of Eugene’s Public Works director, Rich Hoey, who came to Eugene from Olympia, Washington, a little over a year ago. An interim director is filling the role for now.
Over in Springfield, the City Council first swore in a new interim councilor, Andrew Buck, to fill a vacant seat. Then they talked over a proposed city payroll tax the council is considering to help balance its budget. They plan a hearing Dec. 8 to gather public comment on the tax. Lillian Schrock-Clevenger explains.
City Club of Eugene will host three school superintendents — from the Eugene 4J, Springfield and Bethel districts — for a discussion on education issues this Friday.
